I Duran Duran trascorrono i primi mesi del 1982 all'insegna del lavoro e della riflessione; pur continuando la promozione del loro primo album, iniziano a preparare il terreno per l'uscita del prossimo disco.

Il 16 febbraio, nel suo ventunesimo compleanno, Andy Taylor propone di sposarlo alla sua fidanzata Tracey Wilson, mentre lei era ammalata e febbricitante; Tracey ha raccontato in seguito di aver pensato, in un primo momento, ad un'allucinazione dovuta alla febbre!

Intanto la band inizia a scrivere materiale per il nuovo disco; Rio verrà registrato agli Air Studios di Londra, con la produzione di Colin Thurston; la copertina dell'album viene commissionata al famoso artista newyorkese Patrick Nagel, che ne realizzerà due.
Infine, i Duran Duran contattano il regista Russel Mulcahy per la direzione dei video dei singoli estratti dall'album.
Duran Duran spent first months of 1982 working and thinking over: they kept on to promote their first album and began to prepare their next LP.

On Feb. 16th, on his 21st birthday, Andy Taylor, very ill and with a strong flue, proposed his girlfriend, Tracey Wilson: Tracey told once, that she though that the proposal was because of his fever!!!

In the meantime, the band started to work on new stuff for the record: Rio was recorded at Air Studios in London, by a Colin Thurston production; the new album cover was realized by the famous NY artist Patrick Nagel, who drew 2 versions of that.
Also, Duran Duran asked Russel Mulcahy to work for the videos of the songs from the new album.


Nel febbraio, i Duran Duran sono nominati come "Best Newcomer" ai British Rock & Pop Awards.

All'inizio di Aprile la band, con Russel Mulcahy, vola in Sri Lanka per filmare i video di "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Save A Prayer" e "Lonely In Your Nightmare"; a metà mese, poi, i Duran Duran si trasferiscono in Australia, per dare il via al "Rio Tour".

At the beginning of April, the band and Russel Mulcahy, flew to Sri Lanka to film the videoclips of “Hungry Like the Wolf”, “Save a Prayer” and “Lonely In Your Nightmare”: at mid April, they moved to Australia to start the “Rio Tour”.

Il singolo "HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF" esce il 4 maggio; l'album "RIO" esce il 10 maggio, e dopo soli 12 giorni raggiunge la posizione numero 2 delle chart inglesi.
On May 4th, “HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF” sigle was in the store. “RIO” on May 10th and only 12 days after it reached #2 in UK chart.


Dopo i concerti in Australia e Giappone, la band registra alcune performances per la promozione alla TV inglese, e poi vola oltreoceano per il tour americano. Il tour parte il 23 giugno dal New Jersey e si conclude al Greek Theatre di Los Angeles il 27 luglio.
La fine del tour americano coincide con eventi importanti nella vita personale di due membri della band:

proprio a Los Angeles NICK incontra per la prima volta JULIE ANN FRIEDMAN, che diventerà sua moglie.
After Australian and Japanese shows, it was time for some promotions on English TV. Then, they flew overseas to start the US tour. Tour started on June 23rd in New Jersey and ended at the Greek Theatre in L.A. on July 27th.

At the end of the tour, some important events in 2 band member’s life took place:

In L.A. NICK met, for the first time, JULIE ANN FRIEDMAN, who will become, later, his wife.

Il 29 luglio, Andy sposa Tracey Wilson al Chateau Maurmont Hotel a Hollywood, Californa; John è il testimone.



On July 29th, Andy got married with Tracey Wilson at Chateau Maurmont Hotel in Hollywood, CA. John was his best man.


In Agosto la band finisce il tour americano facendo da sopporter ai concerti di quello che sarà l'ultimo tour dei Blondie.
Andy Warhols assiste allo show del 14 agosto.

Intanto viene pubblicato il singolo "Save A Prayer", che raggiunge il n.2 delle chart inglesi in meno di due settimane.

Durante questo tour americano, John incontra per la prima volta il batterista degli Chic Tony Thompson, col quale darà vita tre anni piu tardi al progetto Power Station.

On August the tour was over: Duran Duran was the opening act band of the last Blondie Tour.

Andy Warhols attended the show on August 14th.

In the meantime, “Save a Prayer”, the new single, reached # 2 in the UK chart in less then 2 weeks.

During the tour, John met, for the first time, Chic’s drummer Tony Thompson, one of the men of the 3 years later forthcoming solo project, The Power Station.


L'autunno è dedicato al tour europeo: i Duran Duran girano Svezia, Finlandia, Danimarca, Germania, Olanda, Belgio, Francia, Portogallo e finalmente gli UK.
Il 1° novembre esce in tutto il mondo il singolo "Rio".
Fall is time for the European Tour: Duran Duran played Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Portugal and, at least, UK.
On November 1st, “Rio” the singles is in the stores all over the world.


Il 1982 finisce per i Duran Duran all'insegna della musica live: la band infatti suona al Palladium di New York per l'MTV New Year's Eve Rock'n'Roll Ball.

Lo show è trasmesso in TV.
